Gao Qi on the Role of BRICS in the Global Economy: Potential and Prospects for Cooperation

Gao Qi, the General Representative of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) in Russia, delivered a presentation at the XI Moscow International Financial and Economic Forum. His address focused on the significance of the BRICS group in the contemporary global economic landscape and the potential avenues for enhancing cooperation among its member nations.

In the opening segment of his speech, Mr. Gao Qi presented key metrics that underscore the substantial weight of BRICS countries following their recent expansion. According to his data, these nations collectively comprise nearly half of the world's population, approximately 30% of global gross domestic product (GDP), and one-fifth of international trade. "This establishes BRICS as a crucial and constructive entity in fostering global economic expansion, enhancing global governance structures, and advancing the democratization of international relations," remarked a representative from CCPIT.

The report dedicated particular attention to the principle of complementarity among the economies of the BRICS member states. Mr. Gao Qi elucidated the distinctive competitive advantages of each of the major economies within the group. He highlighted Russia's robust positions in the energy sector and heavy industry, Brazil's strengths in agriculture and mining, China's comprehensive industrial capabilities, and India's proficiency in information technology and services. Additionally, the potential contributions of new entrants from the Middle East and Africa, particularly in the energy and infrastructure sectors, were also emphasized.

A significant portion of the presentation was devoted to an analysis of the current status of mutual trade among BRICS countries. Mr. Gao Qi pointed out that while the collective share of BRICS countries in global trade stands at 20%, the intra-BRICS trade volume accounts for only about 10% of their total foreign trade. This discrepancy, according to him, underscores a substantial untapped potential for the enhancement of cooperative efforts.

Furthermore, Mr. Gao Qi addressed the new opportunities presented by China's "15th Five-Year Plan." He noted that this strategic framework creates conditions for increasing the openness of the Chinese economy, thereby offering additional prospects for businesses from other BRICS nations.
